NEW CLIMBERS WELCOME

Considering trying bouldering for the first time? Here's the crash course. Beginner bouldering classes are available as well!

Adults and kids climbing on Spirit Island

Bouldering is climbing with no ropes or harnesses. Just movement, puzzles, and padded floors. Our walls range from 8 to 16 feet and welcome climbers of all levels, even total beginners (if you can climb a ladder, you’re good to go).

Big Island is busting big climbing myths

“I don’t have enough upper body strength to climb.”

Good news: climbing isn’t an arm-wrestling contest!

It’s way more about footwork, balance, and smart movement than brute strength. Your legs do most of the heavy lifting, and technique beats muscle every time. You’ll build strength as you go, but you don’t need it to start.

“I’m afraid of heights.”

Totally normal, and super common! That’s why we start low, move at your pace, and cheer you on every step of the way. Confidence builds one hold at a time.

“I’m too young (or too old) to start climbing.”

Climbing doesn’t come with an age limit. Whether you’re 5 or 75, the wall meets you where you are. Kids climb because it’s instinctive; adults climb because it keeps them moving, thinking, and laughing. Our routes are built for all bodies and all ages, and the BIB neighborhood is here to cheer you on, no matter when you start.

What new climbers are saying

Life is too short to have a boring workout routine. Bouldering helps me work towards greater grip strength, upper body muscle, balance and flexibility all while hanging out and laughing with friends.”

Amy

“As someone relatively new to the sport, I was so happy with how welcomed I felt at this gym. Friendly desk staff made my experience, and the unique & challenging setting was the cherry on top…. you’re also supporting a locally owned business instead of a big chain like some of the other climbing gyms in Minneapolis!”

Ethan

“I brought a first-timer with me… The next day she sent me a text that said, 'I’m smiling this morning, thinking about how fun the climbing was.' I recommend bouldering to anyone looking for a new experience that revolves around creating your own joy!”

Your first climb: 10 easy steps

1

Meet the BIB circuit diagram

We offer routes for all levels. Yellow and orange tags are a great starting place!

2

Choose your climb

A route or "problem" consists of holds in one color. Difficulty indicated by colored tags at the start of the climb.

3

Begin your climb

Start with one hand on the hold indicated by each colored tag and feet off the mats.

4

Climb on!

Look at the color of the holds you're starting on. Use that same color holds all the way up the climb. Remember to use your leg muscles!

5

Complete your climb

Place both hands on the hold marked with a “top” flag or the top of the wall (if there is no flag) with control. Or climb as high as you're comfortable!

6

Volumes

The big grey shapes create interesting new angles and are considered part of the wall. They are "in play" on all climbs!

7

Downclimbs

The big red jugs with the down arrows can be used to easily descend. Look for them before you climb.

8

Falling

Totally normal! And part of the fun and learning. During your orientation, we'll teach you to fall with proper technique to reduce your risk of injury.

9

Rest

Rest between climbs for muscle recovery and to avoid grip burnout; don’t worry, grip strength comes quickly. It's also a great opportunity to watch and cheer on your climbing buddies!

Neighbors & Beta

Ask fellow climbers for “beta” (climbing tips)—it’s how friendships start here.
